Index to Digest of Obituaries Published in Newspapers of Columbia City Whitley County, Indiana 1856-1910 Compiled by Nellie M. Raber

Nellie Raber's ancestors came to Whitley County in 1842 and helped settle the county. Though she was born two generations later, Nellie was also a pioneer of sorts in the field of tracing family origins. Over a period of more than 50 years, she spent tedious hours combing old newspaper files, courthouse records, marriage records, wills, abstracts, family Bibles - even cemeteries - for information she assembled in volume form.

Nellie provided us with "Abstract of Wills Whitley County, Ind., Book 1 to 5"; "Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City"; "Thorncreek's Eternity Cities, Whitley County, Indiana"; "Obituaries Published at Columbia City, Indiana 1858-1910"; and "Marriages in Whitley County 1860-1884" as well as other unpublished notebooks with information about families in Thorncreek and Smith townships.

Copies of the "Digest of Obituaries" can be found at the Peabody Public Library in Columbia City, the South Whitley-Cleveland Township Library, the Whitley County Historical Museum in Columbia City, and the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne.

The Peabody Public Library has microfilm copies of the majority of the newspapers. They are also in the process of creating an obituary index database for Columbia City newspapers starting in 1911 and continuing to the present day.

The Indiana State Library has some Whitley County newspapers on microfilm.

The South Whitley-Cleveland Township Library has a card file with photocopies of obituaries from the South Whitley Tribune and the Columbia City Post. They also have some South Whitley newspapers on microfilm.
