WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP

Early Baptist Church Cemetery

Washington Township has the fewest cemeteries and fewest burials of the townships. Kaler /Maring had an explanation for this. They felt it was due to the fact that burials of the northeast part of the township went to Evergreen in Jefferson Township. The burials from the southeast were taken to the Lutheran in Huntington Co. The north part of the township went to Eberhard in Columbia Township and the west went to South Whitley. As a result there were only 4 rather small cemeteries in the township.

The first cemetery in the township was located near the center of the township at 1201W on 900S and accompanied the Baptist church. The first reported burial here was said to be that of a daughter of Walling Miller. (Kaler/Maring). The 2nd was said to be Grandma Alexander. though is appears to be all one cemetery there are actually two cemeteries here. The section to the west is the old Baptist and the rows run north and south. It is obvious that some stones are missing so the stones have been numbered to show the approximate distance between existing stones where old graves may have been.

Washington Township Cemetery

To the east of the drive and adjacent to the Baptist cemetery is the Washington Twp.Cemetery. This cemetery has rows that appear to run north and south except that the lot numbers run east to west. The lot number is placed in the first column but they are not in exact order. The trustee’s platt map indicates that there is a potter’s field but if anyone is buried there there is no indication of it.

We have made every attempt to report the name exactly as spelled on the stone even though it could possibly be a mistake. A case in point is found in the Baptist in that of Harriet FORSYTHE wife of Samuel FORSYTHE lies adjacent to Samuel FIRST. Several stones are missing from the Baptist section in which the base is still there. There are indications that some stones may be in an open cistern.

Previous readings done in 1948 by Thelma Eby Ella Kaufman and Geraldine Crowel have been used to help decipher some of the more worn stones. Dr Wallace Williamson also printed an index to this cemetery.

The current reading (Oct 1997) was done by Tonya Brown and Jeanette Brown.
